- Hydrogen is an energy-containing element that can be used in different applications in its final use.
- One way to produce hydrogen is the electrolysis of water (H2O) in which electricity is used to separate its main components: hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). If electricity comes from renewable sources (wind, photovoltaic, etc.), it is called green hydrogen.
- Hydrogen is versatile since it can be used in applications such as transport, storage, and energy generation, industrial processes, among others, with the advantage of being a fuel that does not generate emissions.
Green hydrogen production
- Due to the country’s great potential for green hydrogen generation, different projects are being evaluated in the field of urban and mining transport, thermal uses in industry, production of green ammonia and other industrial compounds.
- Worldwide, Chile is among the 14 largest hydrogen economies, and at the country level, it is projected that hydrogen can contribute 20% to carbon neutrality by 2050.
- Since 2016, GIZ has been promoting the use of the country’s vast renewable energy potential for low-cost production of green hydrogen. This would enable the extensive use of hydrogen in Chile and its export to international markets in the medium term.
